The groove on 00 Gauge was inspired by a track from an obscure South American record. The sound is very much rooted in that traditional 90s DITC flavour complete with lush vibraphone and plucked harp. This track originally came about as a song idea for Bristol-based singer-songwriter Sam Animal. Sam popped round and we were going through old records, looking for some inspiration, when we happened upon this little beauty.

I knocked up some quick drums and Sam played in some nice plucky/strummed guitar licks. Half an hour later and I had the bass line in there along with the essential vibraphone. The only thing we didn’t manage to do was get a vocal written and recorded for it. Not wanting to waste the track, I came back to it for this album and added a load of extra bits on top. Who knows, maybe one day Sam will write a vocal for it and the original vision will be realised.
