All the way down

about

Another track that’s aged like a fine Barry dram. And like most of the first side of Barry, it was produced on the MPC 2000xl. This one has the dubious honour of having the smallest number of audio tracks of any beat on the album: just four (sample, break, kit layer and 808 boom). There isn’t even a baseline, unless you count the 808 boom which, incidentally, is the only 808 feature on the record.
This one is all about the micro chops! The catalyst was the “all the way down” sample, but on further investigation of the source record there were lots more fantastic bits and bobs begging to be pilfered. Little bits were plucked from throughout the original and, once everything got padded up on the MPC, the jamming commenced. I love to just bang out countless free-form sequences and then see which ones stick. Luckily lots did, including a weirdly off-beat hook requesting that you “come on” and “sing along”.
