about

And so to the flip, where we get to glimpse a second side to Barry and my beatmaking. This side is safer in a legal sense, but riskier in its ambition. The challenge was to put the crates to one side and instead compose breaks from scratch, entirely within the computer, using nothing but virtual instruments and software plugins.

To introduce us to this new side I chose to recreate one of my all-time favourite breaks: Harlem Buckdance Strut, by Les McCann. As a youngster I was fascinated by this break, way before I discovered its true identity, as it was used as a skit on Ice T’s LP, The Power. Ice does his best Iceberg Slim impression, telling a hustler’s tale over the Buckdance break. As this is one of my all-time favourite skits, I thought it would be nice to pay homage to it by recreating it as an intro skit.

And so to the technical bit: Like the vast majority of the drums on this side of the album, they come courtesy of Addictive Drums 2 – a truly amazing VST which gives you a vast array of drum kits to play out on your midi controller. The trickiest thing in recreating this break was getting the the echoed ARP synthesiser flourishes sounding right. In the end I had to layer onto the modelled Arp synth sound a touch of mellotron flute. The two voices, combined with the right amount of vintage echo delay, created a pretty convincing result.
