No prizes for guessing the sample in this one! I have long been a massive fan of producers who take a classic break or sample and re-flip it, turning it into something totally new. Some fine examples of this include; Funk Mode by Tragedy, produced by Large Professor; Giantz Ta Thiz by the NYG’z, produced by DJ Premier; and Kingdom Come by Jay Z, produced by Just Blaze. I had recently happened upon some interesting chopping potential for the B.Byrd original while DJing in the club, so thought I would attempt such a beat. I always use the cue points on Serato with the Pioneer S9 pads, an on-the-fly technique that often gives birth to really nice little ideas such as this. As for the cuts, it was great to pay homage to one of my greatest ever inspirations, The Lesson mixes, with my employment of the “Got to have Soul” scratches. Oh, and the Clay Davis idea came to me while out shopping at my local Home Bargains store.
