This track actually represents my first step into the world of Midi Extraction as the main melodic element of this track is extracted from a 70’s Christian Folk song. Like The Organiser, this track was done on my old PT set up, while the midi note extraction used a program called Melodyne. I’d been looking to put Melodyne’s midi extracting to the test for some time, as this seemed like the holy grail for someone like me who’d never properly learned to play keys. To be fair, Melodyne did a pretty decent job of extracting the beautiful piano of the original sample. I then took these midi chords, rearranging and chopping them the same way I would have if they were an audio sample. 

The great thing was I could now audition and use any instrument I wanted. I’ve always been a big fan of old RMI keyboards and have a fantastic VST of the Roksichord. I tend to use this sort of keyboard sound over the more traditional Fender Rhodes type electric pianos and the Roksichord is indeed all over this one. The next stage took me out of the box so to speak, as I persuaded my friend Ollie to come over and play some complimentary guitar licks over the extracted melody. He went fully pentangular on it, building up his guitar lines and seriously enhancing the folky feel of the track.
As with The Organiser I revisited this track in Ableton, first re doing the drums using, you guessed it, Addictive Drums 2 (having originally used a rock break by the group LoneStar). I then played in some obligatory bass using another favourite virtual instrument, the NI Rickenbacker Bass. After that I got seriously carried away layering additional instruments to include organ and oriental guzheng, not to mention Lalo Schifrin’s favourite, the waterphone.
