Harlem Shuffler

from 2 Sides of Barry by Si Spex

about

This slow burner was first heard on my breakout Rhythm Roulette video, and comes courtesy of a soul classic (I’m sure I don’t need to name names). One of the oldest tracks on the album (it’s around 12 years old), it employs a rather interesting chopping technique. I made it on my trusty old MPC 2000XL, first chopping the break into equal quarter notes and then chronologically placing them on the pads. I then wildly reduced the tempo of the track, in effect doubling up the chops. Thanks to the syncopated and rhythmically uncomplicated nature of the original sample, I could re-flip the chops in the fashion demonstrated here – a sort of faux time stretch without any actual physical stretching.
