I have to give my compadre and fellow beat butcher Jimmy Plates the credit for this one. He has a very jammy knack of picking up seriously dope 45s for pennies. That was certainly the case here. Not going to give too much away on the origin of the sample, except to say it’s a pop record from the African continent and totally encapsulates what I like in a killer melodic groove. I do feel a twinge of guilt with this, as Jimmy had a bash at lacing the break himself. But I do think in his heart of hearts he always knew this one had my name on it. I’d say my biggest inspiration for the execution of this track was that of legendary and sadly missed NYC producer Paul C. This sample and the way I rode it out with the drums felt very much in the Paul C style, so I dedicate this track to his memory.
