This is the only track on the sampled side that was specifically made for the album. It was originally just intended to be a skit (the sample had been languishing for some time in a little section of my record collection labeled “Skitworthy”), but once I got busy with it I soon felt it deserved a slightly longer run time. It’s not a particularly obscure sample, but I’ve always dug the vocal lines and the deep epic nature of the music. This beat stands alone on the sampled side of Barry as the only one that uses a virtual drum kit and not a drum break. By this point I was completely sold on VST drum kits, and it would have felt rather restricting going back to a sampled drum break. Not that there is anything wrong with drum breaks – I obviously love em to death and have spent most of my adult life hunting them out in the wild. I just feel that I’ve seen the light now and have way more fun being my very own 1970s drummer.
